Omaha, Nebraska – A teenager was killed and five others were injured following a shooting near the intersection of North 24th and Decatur Streets in Omaha early Sunday morning. As the Omaha community grapples with the aftermath of this violent episode, authorities are appealing for witnesses to assist in the ongoing investigation.
Around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, the Omaha Police Department (OPD) responded to reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered 16-year-old Lamarantae Swift, gravely injured from gunshot wounds. Despite prompt medical attention and transportation to Nebraska Medicine by Omaha Fire Department personnel, the young victim succumbed to his injuries.
In addition to Swift, five other individuals were affected by this incident. Two of them, following the incident, drove themselves to Nebraska Medicine. Meanwhile, three other victims made their way to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center via private transportation.
Chief Todd Schmaderer of OPD expressed deep sorrow and concern over the incident, emphasizing that such violence is unacceptable in the community. Chief Schmaderer noted that preliminary information indicates there had been a significant after-hours gathering in the vicinity where the shooting took place. He stressed the critical need for witnesses to step forward, providing any available information that could aid the police in their pursuit of justice.
