Columbus, Nebraska – A Nebraska man has been sentenced to decades behind bars after admitting responsibility in the death of 25-year-old Kennedi Demuth.
Earlier this week, Jack Reeg, 26, appeared in Platte County District Court, where Judge Jason Doele handed down his sentence for the killing. The case concluded after Reeg previously entered guilty pleas to Second-Degree Murder and Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony.
Under the court’s ruling, Reeg was sentenced to 60 years to life in prison for the Second-Degree Murder conviction, which is classified as a Class IB felony. He also received a sentence of 15 to 25 years in prison for Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony, a Class IC felony.
Consecutive prison terms ordered
Judge Doele ordered that the sentence for the weapon conviction be served consecutively to the murder sentence. As a result, Reeg will serve the prison terms one after the other rather than at the same time, significantly extending the amount of time he will remain incarcerated.
The convictions followed a plea agreement reached earlier in the case. Reeg admitted guilt to one count of Second-Degree Murder and one count of Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony. In exchange for those guilty pleas, prosecutors agreed to dismiss the remaining charges filed against him.
The investigation into Demuth’s death was conducted by the Columbus Police Department. The case was prosecuted jointly by the Platte County Attorney’s Office and the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.
With the sentencing now complete, the criminal case has reached its conclusion, bringing accountability through the court system for the killing of Kennedi Demuth. The lengthy prison sentence reflects the seriousness of the offenses and ensures Reeg will spend many years in state custody.
