Major interstate closure due to blizzard and multi-semi crash

York, Nebraska – Eastbound I-80 was shut down on Christmas Day following a major crash involving multiple semis that led to a complete blockade of traffic.

Blizzard Conditions Lead to Traffic Chaos

The accident occurred on Monday morning, coinciding with a severe blizzard warning. A Nebraska Department of Transportation camera captured the chaotic scene, showing jackknifed semis that completely halted traffic flow. As a result, dozens of vehicles were stranded on the highway, unable to move forward.

In response to the accident, eastbound traffic was rerouted. Vehicles were diverted off the interstate, leading them north into York and then east towards Waco. This detour was necessary to manage the traffic buildup and ensure the safety of motorists.

As of the latest updates, there has been no report of injuries resulting from the crash. However, the situation remains a matter of concern, particularly given the adverse weather conditions.

The National Weather Service has strongly advised against travel, considering the severity of the blizzard. York County is under a blizzard warning until 6 p.m. Tuesday. The weather forecast predicts significant snowfall, with an expectation of four to seven inches of snow accompanied by wind gusts reaching up to 35 miles per hour. These conditions are likely to cause whiteout scenarios, making travel extremely dangerous.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel. The authorities are working to manage the situation and ensure the safety of those affected by the crash and the harsh weather conditions.
