Nebraska’s racetrack casinos boost state revenue in 2023

Lincoln, Nebraska – Nebraska’s burgeoning gaming industry, centered around its four racetrack casinos, made a significant economic impact in 2023. These facilities collectively generated a substantial $17.8 million in tax revenue during their first full year of operation, indicating a promising start for the state’s gaming sector.

First Year of Operations: A Financial Snapshot

The four temporary gaming facilities, located in Lincoln, Fonner Park, Omaha, and Columbus, collectively brought in gross revenues of $89 million. The state, which taxes these establishments at a rate of 20 percent, benefited significantly from this revenue stream. The racetrack casinos contributing to this success are Grand Island Casino Resort in Grand Island, WarHorse Casino in Lincoln, and Harrah’s Columbus NE Racing & Casino.

WarHorse Casino in Lincoln emerged as the top earner, reporting a gaming revenue of $51.5 million in 2023. Following behind was Grand Island with reported revenues of $29.9 million. Harrah’s Columbus NE Racing & Casino, a Caesars Entertainment-operated facility that opened in June 2023, generated $7.3 million. Additionally, a temporary sportsbook in Omaha, operated by WarHorse Gaming, a subsidiary of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska’s Ho-Chunk, earned $224,000 in just two months.

December 2023 marked a new record for the state’s racetrack casinos, bringing in nearly $8.9 million in revenue.

Upcoming Developments and Expansions

The future of Nebraska’s gaming industry looks bright with several major developments on the horizon. Grand Island’s permanent venue, slated to open in 2025, will feature a 37,000-square-foot casino floor, 650 slot machines, 20 table games, and a sportsbook. In Lincoln, the permanent WarHorse Casino will boast a 9,000-square-foot gaming floor with 445 slot machines and additional amenities, including sports book kiosks and racing facilities.

Caesars Entertainment plans to open its permanent location in spring 2024. Meanwhile, the construction of WarHorse Casino Omaha at Horsemen’s Park is underway, with expected completion around June or July 2024.

These developments represent significant milestones in Nebraska’s gaming industry, offering not only increased entertainment options for residents and visitors but also continuing economic benefits for the state. The success of these casinos in their initial year and the promising outlook for future expansions highlight Nebraska’s potential as an emerging player in the national gaming landscape.
