Omaha, Nebraska – The Food Bank for the Heartland, a prominent nonprofit organization serving over 75 counties in Nebraska, has made a significant acquisition with the purchase of a 12-acre property at the bustling intersection of 84th and L Streets in Omaha.
Previously occupied by H&H Chevrolet, a well-known car dealership that recently relocated its business to Sarpy County, the northeast corner of the intersection has now become the new home for the Food Bank.
While specific details regarding the plans for the property have not yet been disclosed by Food Bank officials, public records indicate that the extensive area, encompassing four structures and ample parking spaces, was acquired for a sum of $7.1 million.
Presently, the dealership premises stand vacant, awaiting their transformation under the stewardship of the Food Bank.
Investors Realty, the real estate brokerage that facilitated the sale, highlighted the challenge of finding a suitable buyer for the property with its diverse range of buildings and varying elevations. The Food Bank’s decision to acquire the site met this challenge and represented an ideal match.
Established in 1981, the Food Bank for the Heartland presently operates from its base near 105th and J Streets in Omaha. The organization collaborates with 544 network partners, including pantries, schools, churches, emergency shelters, and other nonprofits, to ensure the availability of emergency and supplemental food supplies.
In the fiscal year 2022, the Food Bank distributed close to 27 million meals across its extensive service area, spanning 93 counties primarily in Nebraska, with a portion also extending into western Iowa.
In addition to the Food Bank’s expansion, Investors Realty notes that H&H Chevrolet, a fixture at the 84th and L Streets intersection since 1968, has significantly increased its operational space with a move to the 30-acre Steel Ridge development, surpassing its previous location’s capacity.
