Three arrested in Omaha homicide and felony assault investigation

Omaha, Nebraska – The Omaha Police Department has confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection to an ongoing homicide and aggravated assault investigation

The suspects, identified as Luis Hernandez-Melendez, Alvin Melendez, and Valeria Vasquez, have been apprehended in connection with a shooting that took place on Sunday evening at an Omaha apartment complex.

Upon arrival at the scene, Omaha police discovered two gunshot victims within a vehicle. The victims were subsequently identified as Luis Romero Rodriguez, 28, and Jose Alfredo Lapop-Flores, 24.

Tragically, Rodriguez was pronounced deceased at the Citadel Apartments, located in the vicinity of S 86th Parkway and Q Street. Lapop-Flores’ condition is yet to be disclosed by the police.

Hernandez-Melendez, 34, is facing charges of first-degree murder, first-degree felony assault, and two counts of using a weapon to commit a felony. Alvin Melendez, 28, was apprehended on charges of being an accessory to a felony and tampering with physical evidence. Vasquez, aged 30, is also facing charges related to being an accessory to a felony.

The Omaha Police Department extended their gratitude to the Ashland Police Department, Saunders County Sheriff’s Department, Nebraska State Patrol, and the department’s uniform patrol bureau for their collaborative efforts during the investigation.
