Recent in-custody death postpones Sarpy County Correctional Center opening

Omaha, Nebraska – The Sarpy County Correctional Center’s grand opening event, initially set for public attendance, has been postponed due to an unfortunate incident involving the death of an inmate the previous week.

The joint decision to cancel the Aug. 18 unveiling of the center was reached by the Sarpy County Board of Commissioners in conjunction with the Sarpy County Department of Corrections. Although the scheduled public tours on Aug. 19 have been canceled, the department confirms the continuation of the planned operational transfer to the new facility.

The reason for the event’s cancellation revolves around the recent inmate fatality, as outlined in an official press statement. The statement from Sarpy County authorities elucidated, “County resources have been redirected to the investigation into the in-custody death, and supporting and assisting those involved.”

Inmate Huan Pham, aged 43, was discovered deceased in his cell on Aug. 8. Subsequent investigations have led to the pressing of charges against three fellow inmates, Dreshawn Stewart, Derek Kern, and Diego Vasquez, in connection with Mr. Pham’s untimely passing.
