Omaha residents impacted by water main break on West Center Road

Omaha, Nebraska – The City of Omaha Public Works Department has announced the closure of West Center Road between South 105th Street and South 108th Street due to a water main break that requires repairs by the Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD).

Residents in the area, like Amy Kohtz and her husband, were startled by the sound of what appeared to be ongoing construction activity during their lunchtime. Upon investigation, they discovered water gushing out of the median.

Initially, the road remained open, but the extensive flooding caused concern among drivers, as the depth of the water was difficult to determine due to the road sinking in certain areas. Kohtz shared that this was the first time in over 20 years of residing in their home that they had experienced a water main break.

MUD reported that a 12-inch water main was the source of the break, affecting four residential customers. However, local businesses confirmed that their water service remained unaffected by the incident.

Kohtz commended the swift response of MUD, highlighting their efficiency and coordination in handling the situation. She expressed her admiration for the seamless execution of their roles during the repair process.

A spokesperson for MUD stated that service restoration is expected by 10:30 p.m. and that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the water main break.
