Omaha, Nebraska – The Omaha City Council has given its approval to a nearly $3 million agreement with local architectural firm Leo A Daly, marking an important step towards the realization of a proposed combined police and fire headquarters. Mayor Jean Stothert and Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman have shared their visions for this ambitious project.
Mayor Stothert emphasized that the idea of combining the police and fire departments into a single headquarters has long been a goal. She highlighted the benefits of this approach, pointing out that many other cities have successfully adopted similar models. With funding now secured, the project can move forward.
“Our next step is to engage with experts, carefully design the facility, and determine the optimal location for efficiency,” stated Mayor Stothert. She emphasized the importance of creating a state-of-the-art facility that ensures the safety of both police officers and firefighters, as well as the general public.
As for the fate of the current buildings, Mayor Stothert explained that they would become valuable assets for potential future development. However, Chief Bossman mentioned that there is a possibility the fire department may need to continue using their existing building, depending on the chosen site and its proximity to their ideal response area.
Chief Bossman expressed enthusiasm for the new headquarters, noting that it would provide additional space for larger meetings and accommodate the needs of both departments. She emphasized the benefits of increased collaboration and efficiency between the police and fire departments, as they often respond to the same emergency scenes.
Mayor Stothert acknowledged that the project may require a bond issue but assured the public that she does not anticipate a tax increase. According to the Public Works Department, construction is expected to be completed by the summer of 2027.
The combined police and fire headquarters project represents a significant step towards enhancing public safety and fostering improved coordination between Omaha’s law enforcement and firefighting agencies.
