Omaha, Nebraska – Omaha Public Schools, the most extensive school district within the Omaha metropolitan area, is initiating a measure to ensure that students have sufficient access to nourishment even during school breaks.
The school district has launched a complimentary summer meals program intended for all students in the district, set to run until July 31. The school district assures that the provided meals will be nutritionally balanced, including a range of fruits, vegetables, varied breakfast choices such as cereals, and hot lunches.
The necessity for such a program is escalating, according to Tammy Yarmon, the Executive Director of OPS Nutrition Services. She cites inflation as a significant cause, which is exerting pressure on numerous families’ financial resources.
“When you go to the grocery store, or if you go to the restaurants, it’s very expensive and the price of fuel fluctuates so much,” Yarmon expressed. She believes this initiative will “help supplement their income, and their budget, they have in their homes.”
Commencing from Monday, the school district stated that The Simple Foundation, located in South Omaha, will serve as the distribution site for the free meals. Highlighting the importance of the program, Yarmon reiterated, “The need is great for children. They’re having enrichment programs there, and so they want to offer breakfast and lunch.”
