Investigation underway after Grand Island shooting leaves three dead

Grand Island, Nebraska – In the early hours of Sunday morning in the northwest region of Grand Island, a tragic shooting occurred, resulting in three fatalities.

Grand Island Police Captain Jim Duering disclosed to Local News Omaha that the situation unfolded around 2:30 a.m. within the vicinity of the 4100 block of Arizona Avenue.

Marty Klein, the Hall County Attorney, stated that the parties involved in the incident include a 26-year-old husband named Rex Goodell and his 23-year-old wife, Emily Goodell, both originally from Lincoln. The reasons leading Emily Goodell to be present in Grand Island at the time of the incident have yet to be clarified.

According to Attorney Klein, Rex Goodell approached the Arizona Avenue residence with intentions to communicate with his wife. Unfortunately, this led to a dispute which tragically ended with Emily Goodell and Hayes Morgheim, a 23-year-old resident of the house, being fatally shot by Rex Goodell. The house in question is owned by Morgheim’s parents who were present during the incident but remained unharmed.

By the time local law enforcement arrived on the scene, Rex Goodell had taken his own life.

Captain Duering noted that although the police officers did not discharge their firearms during the incident, the investigation has been transferred to the South Central Area Law Enforcement Services (SCALES), a unit partnered with Hastings Police, in pursuit of an unbiased inquiry due to the officers’ close proximity to the event.

Further developments on this ongoing investigation will be provided by Local News Omaha as they emerge.
