Former Omaha Councilman agrees to restitution in fraud case

Omaha, Nebraska – Vinny Palermo, the former Omaha City Councilman embroiled in a public corruption scandal, has reached a significant point in his legal journey. He and his legal team have agreed to a restitution amount with the U.S. Attorney following his guilty plea to one count of wire fraud.

Palermo, who has been a central figure in this high-profile case, agreed to pay $10,292 in restitution. This agreement comes just before his sentencing by a federal judge in Lincoln next week. The indictment against Palermo involved allegations of receiving personal and financial benefits in return for actions favoring the Latino Peace Officers Association (LPOA) and Police Athletics for Community Engagement (PACE) in his capacity as a councilman.

The plea deal, which involves a maximum term of 21 months, leaves some room for judicial discretion. The sentencing judge will consider various factors from the pre-sentence investigation, which might influence the final decision. Whether Palermo receives the maximum sentence or a lesser term remains at the judge’s discretion.

Palermo has been in custody at the Saunders County Jail since April last year. The judge’s decision to keep him detained stemmed from concerns about potential obstruction of justice or witness tampering by him or his three co-defendants.

With eight months already served, Palermo could face an additional 13 months in federal prison if the judge opts for the maximum 21-month sentence. However, if the judge leans towards a lighter sentence, Palermo might be released as early as this Fall. His attorney has described the plea agreement as “well reasoned and well thought out,” reflecting the actual circumstances of the case.

As the community awaits the final chapter of this legal saga, Palermo’s sentencing on Tuesday, Jan. 16, will mark a critical moment. The outcome will not only determine Palermo’s immediate future but also serve as a significant point in addressing public corruption and maintaining trust in local governance.
