Nebraska – Following its approval by the legislature earlier this year, the bill championed by State Senator Tom Brewer will be enacted on Saturday. This legislation eliminates the mandate for gun owners in Nebraska who wish to conceal carry to obtain a permit from their local sheriff’s office.
Accredited concealed handgun permit instructors are in favor of the law. Nevertheless, they emphasize the importance of the training once necessitated by the permit process. One such instructor is Kurt Geschwener, a gun owner and real estate agent.
“I don’t believe it’s a state’s job or my job to tell people what they should or shouldn’t do as long as they don’t harm other people,” Geschwener stated. “It’s a constitutional right. However, I believe individuals intending to carry a firearm should undergo some form of training prior to doing so.”
He further advises those considering not renewing their permits to reconsider. “It confirms that you’ve undergone the course and received foundational training,” he explained. “While not obligatory to take the state’s course, it remains, to my knowledge, the most thorough.”
Geschwener also mentioned another potential incentive for Nebraska gun owners to retain their permit: recognition in other states that mandate permits. Although the state will continue to offer its permit, its necessity will be rendered optional.
Omaha Police have voiced similar sentiments, encouraging gun owners to pursue training and maintain responsibility. Geschwener anticipates that while many will persist in enrolling in classes, the overall demand for courses like his might decrease.
“I’m sure there are individuals who believe they can forgo it,” he remarked. “Ultimately, the choice is theirs, given the freedoms we enjoy in America. We can only hope for the best.”
