Texas woman charged with murder of Uber driver

Texas – An individual residing in Texas, identified as Phoebe Copas, has been indicted on charges of murder following the fatal shooting of her Uber driver, as confirmed by local law enforcement.

The incident, which transpired on June 16, involved 48-year-old Copas reportedly shooting her driver, Daniel Piedra Garcia, after availing an Uber ride. Garcia, sadly, succumbed to his injuries in the following days.

It was revealed that Copas informed the police of a fear that her Uber ride was veering off towards Mexico, spurred by the sight of a sign indicating “Juarez, Mexico.”

However, the El Paso Police Department, in its official statement, negated her claim, stating, “The investigation does not support that a kidnapping took place.” The presence of signs for Juarez in El Paso, a city bordering Mexico, is not unusual.

It was further clarified by the police department that Piedra Garcia had not deviated from the originally requested destination by Copas.

As reported by the El Paso Times, the arrest affidavit indicates that Copas dialed 911 following the shooting. Didi Lopez, niece of the deceased driver, informed the newspaper, “When the affidavit came out, it said that she shot my uncle and that she took a picture of him after she shot him and she sent it to her boyfriend, and then she called the police. She took a photo before calling 911.”

Copas was apprehended during the preliminary inquiry. Initially indicted for aggravated assault, her charges were escalated to murder subsequent to the death of Piedra Garcia. Currently, she remains incarcerated with a bond set at $1.5 million.
