Lincoln, Nebraska – A joint investigation by the Lincoln Police Department (LPD) and Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) led to an officer-involved shooting, which is currently under the purview of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident transpired on Monday around 2:45 p.m., while investigators from the Lincoln Lancaster County Narcotics Task Force were carrying out an operation in the vicinity of NW 27th and West O streets, situated in Lincoln. Initial reports suggest that an altercation ensued between the law enforcement officers and a suspect during the course of the investigation.
The situation escalated when an investigator from the Nebraska State Patrol spotted the suspect in possession of a firearm. Consequently, an officer from both the LPD and the NSP discharged their weapons, which resulted in the suspect being hit.
The NSP reported that following the shooting, immediate medical attention was provided to the injured suspect and an ambulance was promptly called to the scene. The suspect was then transported to Bryan Health Center West Campus by Lincoln Fire and Rescue with critical injuries. In the aftermath of the incident, a firearm was recovered from the scene, NSP confirmed. Fortunately, no officers were harmed during the confrontation.
In the wake of the shooting, the LPD and NSP have entrusted the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office with the responsibility of conducting an independent investigation into the event. Both officers who were involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, adhering to the respective policy of each agency.
