Young man receives lengthy prison sentence after no contest plea in Omaha theater shooting

Omaha, Nebraska – A young man connected to a violent shooting outside an Omaha movie theater has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after changing his plea in the case, bringing a measure of resolution to an incident that unfolded in a busy public area.

Shooting Outside Theater Led to Lengthy Sentence

Rashaun Carodine, 21, was sentenced Tuesday in Douglas County District Court after previously entering a no contest plea to second-degree assault. Court records show Carodine changed his plea in November, moving the case closer to sentencing. A judge ultimately ordered him to serve 8 to 12 years in prison, with 246 days of credit for time already spent in custody.

The charges stem from a shooting that occurred outside an Omaha movie theater. According to court documents, surveillance footage captured Carodine inside the theater lobby earlier that evening, where he was allegedly watching the eventual victim. After remaining inside for a period of time, Carodine left the building and returned to the parking lot roughly 45 minutes later.

As the victim and his girlfriend exited the theater, a man ran toward them and fired several shots before fleeing the scene. A police report later confirmed that the victim was struck in the leg. Surveillance cameras then showed a Chrysler 200 speeding away from the parking lot moments after the shooting.

Investigators were able to identify the vehicle through an earlier incident in which Carodine had been cited for driving without license plates. Records showed the car was registered to his mother. Days later, police located Carodine during a traffic stop and received consent to search his residence. During that search, officers recovered two firearms.

Detectives also examined Carodine’s social media accounts and found a photograph showing him holding one of the guns discovered during the search. That image became a key piece of evidence tying him to the weapons.

The case highlights how surveillance footage, traffic stops, and online activity can come together during an investigation, ultimately leading to accountability for a violent act carried out in a public setting.
