Omaha spray grounds resume operations after water use restrictions

Omaha, Nebraska – Last week, the Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD) issued a request to consumers for a voluntary reduction in outdoor water consumption.

This request was a response to a compromised water supply due to a water main rupture near the Florence Water Production Plant. Consequently, city hydrant parties were called off and public spray grounds, also referred to as splash pads, were shut down.

A news release from the mayor’s office on Friday announced the resumption of operations at all 12 City of Omaha spray grounds, effective from Saturday, August 5.

The release further stated: “Mayor Jean Stothert and MUD President Mark Doyle addressed the imposed water restrictions by MUD in the wake of the substantial water main rupture at a treatment facility last month. Doyle acknowledged that customer adherence to these restrictions, coupled with the recent heavy rainfall, is aiding in decreasing water consumption.

In the event that MUD recommends another reduction in water use by the City, the spray grounds may be subjected to temporary closure once again.”
