Omaha responds to imminent heatwave with multiple cooling centers

Omaha, Nebraska – In anticipation of the imminent heatwave, The Salvation Army has announced the establishment of three cooling centers across Omaha. This measure comes in light of meteorological forecasts predicting mid to high 90-degree temperatures throughout the forthcoming week, with heat index values potentially escalating to around 110 degrees.

The Salvation Army has clarified that these cooling centers will furnish air-conditioned surroundings and supply bottled water, serving as temporary sanctuaries for those seeking a brief escape from the intense heat. The operational timings of these centers, however, will fluctuate based on their geographical locations, as detailed below.

  • Heritage Place at Renaissance Village, located at 3612 Cuming Street, will welcome visitors on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Kroc Center, situated at 2825 Y Street, will remain open on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Salvation Army North Corps, at 2424 Pratt Street, will operate on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Additionally, The Siena Francis House has confirmed that its own cooling center will be operational. The Services Center, stationed at 1401 North 18th Street, will open its doors from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on certain days, contingent upon the weather forecast. Siena Francis has assured that water, sunscreen, and lip balm will be available to those who register at the center. Furthermore, a lunch provision has been arranged between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Eligibility for these services extends to anyone currently undergoing a housing crisis, provided they have not been accommodated in an emergency shelter or housing program.

For any queries, please reach out to Siena Francis at (402) 341-1821.
