Omaha, Nebraska – In a heartwarming gesture of support and appreciation, Millard’s American Legion is making the holiday season brighter for military personnel deployed overseas. This year, they have embarked on a mission to send nearly 200 care packages to various military units, ensuring that those serving far from home can feel the warmth of the holiday spirit.
The initiative kicked off on Saturday with a packing party, where the community came together in a show of solidarity and support for the troops. Dozens of volunteers, young and old, gathered to prepare these special presents, each filled with items that would remind the troops of home and convey appreciation for their service.
These care packages are destined for National Guard and reservist units from Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas, who are currently deployed in Southwest Asia and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The choice of recipients underscores the Legion’s commitment to supporting local service members, ensuring they are not forgotten during the festive season.
U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Albert Greenwood highlighted the significance of these packages, noting that they serve as a powerful reminder of the reasons behind their service. “That serve and people that have been in understand what it means to be away from your family and not being able to be there especially around the holidays so just give them a little something to say hey you know think about you support you when you come back you can celebrate,” said Greenwood.
Furthermore, the initiative serves as a reminder that military members in need can always reach out to the USO for support, including receiving a care package. This ongoing support is crucial for maintaining the morale of those serving abroad and reaffirming the community’s unwavering support for their sacrifices.
