Omaha, Nebraska – Omaha Fire Department personnel responded to a fire at an apartment complex located near 49th and Dodge Street on Monday evening.
Battalion Chief Danny Gates said that the fire remained restricted to a single apartment, which incurred some damage. Investigators determined that the fire’s origin was due to combustibles placed too close to a heat source. On arrival, the fire team observed a minor fire on a stove top, which had subsequently spread to the overhead cabinets.
Given the prevailing high temperatures, the firefighters implemented additional safety measures to effectively extinguish the fire.
Regarding future fire emergencies, Gates indicated that extra crews would be summoned. “They’re not specifically here to fight fire,” Gates explained, “they’re here to relieve the initial responders, and once their task is complete, these relief crews will ensure they are safely evacuated.”
To prevent heat related emergencies, Gates emphasized the importance of hydration and minimizing exposure to extreme heat. Moreover, he underscored the need to routinely check vehicles, ensuring no one, be it a child or pet, remains inside during hot conditions. “Even if you’re certain you haven’t left anyone in the car, it’s still a good idea to look around your vehicle before you get out and leave,” he added.
