Bellevue, Nebraska – Bellevue, a city known for its forward-thinking leadership, is currently buzzing with excitement following a recent market analysis that highlights the city’s potential in expanding Nebraska’s casino industry. This analysis has placed Bellevue at the forefront of potential revenue generation, sparking discussions about future developments and the city’s role in the growing casino market.
The study, conducted by the Innovation Group, has revealed that Bellevue ranks as the top candidate for casino industry expansion in Nebraska. This finding is significant considering the limited number of casino and horse racing licenses currently issued in the state. With only six licenses granted, some of which are still in development phases, the competition for expansion is intense.
In a recent move, the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission relocated the Hastings license to Ogallala, citing insufficient community support in Hastings. This decision underscores the importance of local backing in such endeavors. Bellevue, however, seems to have no such hurdles, with city leaders eagerly eyeing the prospects of welcoming a new casino.
The report from the Innovation Group outlines that a Bellevue casino could generate an impressive $60 million more than any other expansion scenarios considered. This projection is despite the city’s proximity to Iowa and the ongoing construction of the Warhorse Casino near 63rd and Q Street in Omaha. The study argues that the vast population base of the Omaha metro area can sustain multiple casinos, ensuring enough revenue for all.
Bellevue officials, including John Hassett of Bellevue Downs Racetrack and Casino, are optimistic yet believe these figures are conservative. Hassett expressed gratitude for the timely completion of the study, which is essential before any new casino locations are considered. He also mentioned other studies that place the potential revenue for a Bellevue casino and racetrack even higher, over the $100 million mark.
The city’s vision extends beyond just adding a casino. Officials are looking to integrate other projects, such as an entertainment district and a water park, to create a comprehensive development plan. Mayor Rusty Hike highlighted the opportunity presented by the available land on Bellevue’s south side, especially around the new Highway 34 and Kennedy Freeway. This area, described as a “blank canvas,” offers ample space for innovative development.
In addition to the casino, Bellevue’s proposal includes introducing quarter-horse racing, a format involving a shorter track where horses achieve higher speeds, adding another exciting dimension to the city’s entertainment offerings.
While there is currently no fixed timeline for the commission’s expansion plans, the recent study will be a topic of discussion at its meeting on January 19. This meeting is anticipated to shed more light on the potential steps forward for Bellevue in its quest to become a new hub for casino and entertainment in Nebraska.
