Governor Pillen Appoints Breanna D. Flaherty as New County Court Judge in Nebraska’s Fifth Judicial District

Lincoln, Nebraska – Governor Jim Pillen has named Breanna D. Flaherty of Columbus as the newest county court judge in Nebraska’s Fifth Judicial District, following the retirement of Judge C. Jo Petersen. The Fifth Judicial District encompasses eleven counties, including Boone, Butler, Colfax, Hamilton, Merrick, Nance, Platte, Polk, Saunders, Seward, and York.

Flaherty brings a wealth of legal and public service experience to the bench. She currently serves as the Platte County Attorney, a position she has held since 2012. Her years in that office also include time as both deputy and chief deputy attorney, giving her extensive prosecutorial background and a strong understanding of the local justice system.

In addition to her work in the courtroom, Flaherty is an adjunct instructor at Central Community College’s Columbus campus, where she teaches criminal law, criminal procedure, and other legal topics. Her commitment to community engagement is further reflected in her service on multiple boards and councils. She currently sits on the boards of the Centro Hispano Comunitario de Nebraska and the Columbus Optimist Club.

Flaherty has also held statewide positions, including work with the Nebraska Coalition for Juvenile Justice, the County Attorney Standards Advisory Council, and the Nebraska Children’s Commission. Her dedication to youth development is evident through her role as a mock trial coach for students at Scotus Catholic School.

Educationally, Flaherty holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Wayne State University, a master’s degree in forensic science from Nebraska Wesleyan University, and a juris doctor from the University of Nebraska College of Law.

By appointing Flaherty, Governor Pillen ensures that the judicial vacancy will be filled by an individual with deep roots in legal practice and community service. “Breanna D. Flaherty of Columbus” will now take on her new role with a strong foundation of experience, professionalism, and commitment to Nebraska’s legal system.
